Am I singing off-key? Playing an instrument and it sounds like cats wailing? But how do we create harmonies and accurately judge by ear when it’s “right”? Should I use a tuner? Sine waves? No, I’ll use my ears! But what if I’m convinced I have no musical ear and simply can’t “hear it”?
In the lecture “Musical Deafness” by Matej Sloboda, we’ll learn how to listen, what to listen for, and what beautiful sounds our hearing can recognize as both pleasant and easily tunable. The goal is to open up a path for the audience to be able to tune a guitar by ear and set off on an adventure.
Matej Sloboda is a Slovak composer and conductor. He studied composition in Bratislava, Graz, and Vienna. He is currently a PhD student at JAMU in Brno and spent the past year at the Universität der Künste Berlin. He is the mastermind behind the exceptional project EnsembleSpectrum and one-third of the experimental music collective Critical Band.
